Refrigerator

Freezer

Signs of Spoilage

  • Unusual or off-odor
  • Visible mold growth
  • Changes in color or texture not typical for the product
  • Stale or rancid taste
  • Bulging or leaking packaging (for sealed products)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to perishable foods. For shelf-stable conservation snacks, this rule is generally not applicable unless the snack contains perishable ingredients or has been opened and exposed to conditions that could promote bacterial growth.

Not applicable to unopened, shelf-stable conservation snacks. For any perishable components or after opening, the danger zone is 40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C).

Unopened, shelf-stable conservation snacks are designed to be safe at room temperature until their 'Best By' date. Once opened, if the snack contains perishable ingredients (e.g., dairy, fresh fruit), it should be treated as a perishable food and not left at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if above 90°F/32°C).
