Not Recommended

Not recommended for extended storage

Fresh cilantro wilts quickly at room temperature. For very short-term storage (less than 2 hours), keep stems in water. Refrigeration is highly recommended for quality and safety.

Refrigerator

7-10 days

Store fresh cilantro like a bouquet of flowers: trim stems, place in a glass of water, cover loosely with a plastic bag, and refrigerate. Change water every 1-2 days.

Freezer

10-12 months

Wash and dry thoroughly. Chop and freeze in ice cube trays with water or oil, or blanch briefly before freezing in airtight containers or freezer bags.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Wilting
  • Yellowing or browning leaves
  • Slimy texture
  • Off-odor
  • Mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Fresh cilantro should be refrigerated promptly. While not a high-risk perishable food in the same way as cooked meats, prolonged exposure to room temperatures, especially within the danger zone, will rapidly degrade quality and can encourage microbial growth. Discard if left out for more than 2 hours.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash fresh cilantro thoroughly under cool running water before use.

2

Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for herbs and raw meats.

3
