Corn TortillaShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Unopened: Best by date; Opened: Apply 2-hour rule, then refrigerate or discard.
Store unopened packages in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Once opened, for best quality and safety, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate promptly. Do not leave at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Refrigerator
7-10 days (opened or unopened)
Store in an airtight bag or container to prevent drying out and mold growth. Keep away from strong-smelling foods.
Freezer
6-8 months (opened or unopened)
Wrap tightly in plastic wrap, then place in a heavy-duty freezer bag or airtight container. Thaw in the refrigerator or microwave before use.
Signs of Spoilage
- Visible mold (fuzzy spots, green, black, or white growth)
- Off-odor (sour, yeasty, or unpleasant smell)
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Discoloration
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
If corn tortillas have been left out at room temperature for longer than the recommended time, they should be discarded to prevent potential foodborne illness, especially if opened.
Safe Handling
Always wash hands with soap and water before and after handling food.
Prevent cross-contamination by keeping tortillas separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
If reheating, ensure they are heated thoroughly to desired temperature, though specific internal temperature is not required for safety as they are already cooked.
