Not Recommended

Unsafe

Crema is a perishable dairy product and must be refrigerated. Do not store at room temperature.

Refrigerator

1-3 weeks

Keep crema refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below. Keep tightly covered after opening to prevent contamination and absorb odors.

Freezer

Not recommended for quality; safe indefinitely at 0°F (-18°C)

While safe indefinitely, freezing crema is not recommended due to changes in texture (separation, graininess) upon thawing. If frozen, thaw in the refrigerator and stir well before use; it may be best suited for cooking rather than direct consumption.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off odor
  • Visible mold growth
  • Significant discoloration (e.g., yellowing or green spots)
  • Unusual texture, such as excessive liquid separation, sliminess, or graininess

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods, including crema, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Always refrigerate crema promptly after purchase and use. Discard any crema that has been exposed to temperatures within the danger zone for longer than the recommended time limits.
