Pantry

Not Recommended

Not recommended

Feta cheese is a perishable dairy product and requires constant refrigeration for safety and quality.

Refrigerator

1 week

Store opened crumbled feta in its original brine or in a tightly sealed airtight container with a small amount of water or olive oil to keep it moist and prevent drying out. Place in the coldest part of the refrigerator.

Freezer

Not recommended (quality may suffer)

While freezing feta cheese is safe, its texture may become more crumbly, mealy, or dry after thawing, affecting its quality. If freezing, do so in an airtight container or freezer bag, removing as much air as possible.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Visible mold growth (any color other than the cheese's natural appearance)
  • Sour, yeasty, or off-odor
  • Slimy or excessively soft texture
  • Discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Do not leave perishable foods, including crumbled feta, at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4.4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Refrigerate promptly. Discard any crumbled feta left in the danger zone for longer than the recommended time to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

2

3

Do not leave crumbled feta at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
