Opened crushed tomatoes should not be stored at room temperature. Unopened cans/jars can be stored in a cool, dark pantry for 12-18 months.
Refrigerator
5-7 days
Transfer opened crushed tomatoes to an airtight, non-metallic container before refrigerating to maintain quality and prevent metallic taste.
Freezer
10-12 months
For best quality, transfer to freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, leaving headspace. Thaw in the refrigerator.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mold growth
- Sour or fermented odor
- Discoloration
- Fuzzy appearance
- Bulging can (for unopened product, indicates severe spoilage and should be discarded immediately)
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F
Perishable foods, including opened crushed tomatoes, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.
Safe Handling
Always use clean utensils when scooping from the container.
Refrigerate promptly after opening.
Do not consume if there are any signs of spoilage.
