Cucumber (Kyuri)Shelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended for extended storage; use within 1-2 days if at room temperature
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and ethylene-producing fruits if kept at room temperature for a very short period. Refrigeration is preferred for longer storage.
Refrigerator
1 week
Store unwashed in a plastic bag or airtight container in the crisper drawer. Do not store with ethylene-producing fruits like apples or bananas, as ethylene gas can accelerate spoilage.
Freezer
10-12 months (for best quality, texture will be soft)
Wash, peel (if desired), and slice or dice. Pack into airtight freezer bags or containers, removing as much air as possible. Best used in cooked dishes or smoothies after thawing due to texture changes.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft spots
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Mold growth
- Off-odor
- Discoloration (yellowing or dark spots)
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)
Do not leave cut cucumbers at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), reduce this time to 1 hour. Whole cucumbers left at room temperature should be consumed within 1-2 days.
Safe Handling
Wash cucumbers thoroughly under running water before eating, even if you plan to peel them.
Refrigerate cut cucumbers promptly in an airtight container.
Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for produce and raw meats.
