Cut bananas are highly perishable and should be refrigerated immediately to slow browning and spoilage.

Refrigerator

3-4 days

Store cut bananas in an airtight container to minimize exposure to air and slow browning. A small amount of lemon juice or other acidic fruit juice can help prevent browning.

Freezer

8-12 months

Peel and slice bananas before freezing. For best results, freeze slices in a single layer on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer to an airtight freezer bag or container. Ideal for smoothies or baking.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Excessive browning or blackening beyond normal oxidation
  • Mushy or slimy texture
  • Sour, alcoholic, or off-odor
  • Visible mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Do not leave cut bananas at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.
