Cut onions should be refrigerated promptly. Do not leave at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Refrigerator

3-4 days

Store cut onions in a sealed container or plastic bag to prevent odor transfer to other foods and to maintain freshness.

Freezer

10-12 months

Chop or slice onions as desired. Pack into freezer bags or airtight containers. No blanching is required. Can be frozen raw or cooked.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft or mushy texture
  • Strong, unpleasant odor
  • Visible mold
  • Discoloration (dark spots)

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Do not leave cut onions at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.
