Dandelion GreensShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Dandelion greens are highly perishable and should not be stored at room temperature for extended periods. They will wilt and spoil quickly.
Refrigerator
3-5 days
Store unwashed dandelion greens in a loose plastic bag or wrapped in a damp paper towel in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash thoroughly just before use.
Freezer
10-12 months
To freeze dandelion greens, blanch them first by immersing in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then immediately transfer to ice water to stop cooking. Drain thoroughly, squeeze out excess water, and pack into freezer-safe bags or containers, removing as much air as possible.
Signs of Spoilage
- Wilting or limp texture
- Yellowing or browning of leaves
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Strong, unpleasant odor
- Visible mold growth
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F
Perishable foods, including fresh dandelion greens, should not be left at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time is reduced to 1 hour.
Safe Handling
Wash dandelion greens thoroughly under running water before eating raw or cooking to remove dirt and potential contaminants.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw greens separate from other foods, especially raw meat, poultry, and seafood.
Consume promptly for best quality and safety, as fresh greens are highly perishable.
