Not Recommended

Not recommended

Fresh dandelion roots should not be stored in the pantry as they will wilt and spoil quickly. For optimal freshness, refrigerate immediately.

Refrigerator

1-2 weeks

Store unwashed dandelion roots in a plastic bag or wrapped in a damp paper towel in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash thoroughly only when ready to use.

Freezer

10-12 months

Wash, scrub, and peel dandelion roots. Blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then immediately cool in ice water. Drain well, pat dry, and pack into airtight freezer bags or containers before freezing.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft or mushy texture
  • Mold growth
  • Off-odor
  • Significant discoloration (dark spots or unusual browning)

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Perishable foods, including fresh dandelion roots, should not be left at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time reduces to 1 hour.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash dandelion roots thoroughly under running water before use to remove any soil or debris.

2

Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for fresh produce and raw meats.

3

If cooking, ensure roots are heated thoroughly. While often consumed raw or in teas, if incorporated into cooked dishes, follow general food safety cooking guidelines.
