Freezing can introduce moisture and affect the texture and palatability of dry cat food. It is not necessary for dry kibble.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Mold growth
  • Rancid or sour odor
  • Presence of pests (e.g., weevils, bugs)
  • Significant changes in color or texture
  • Stale or unpleasant smell

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule (and 1-hour rule above 90°F/32°C) primarily applies to perishable human foods. For dry pet food, the main concern at room temperature is maintaining quality and preventing pest infestation.

The danger zone (40°F–140°F) is not directly applicable to dry pet food in the same way as human perishable foods. The concern is maintaining a cool, dry environment to prevent mold and rancidity.

Store dry cat food in a cool, dry place, ideally below 80°F (27°C), to maintain its quality, prevent rancidity, and deter pest infestation. Avoid storing in areas with high humidity or fluctuating temperatures.
