FigsShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended for extended storage
Fresh figs are highly perishable and ripen quickly. For optimal safety and quality, refrigerate immediately. Only store at room temperature for 1-2 days if very firm and unripe, to allow ripening.
Refrigerator
2-3 days
Store fresh, ripe figs unwashed in a shallow container or on a plate lined with a paper towel, covered loosely, in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Wash gently just before eating.
Freezer
10-12 months
Wash and dry figs thoroughly. You can freeze them whole, sliced, or peeled. For best results, arrange figs in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid, then transfer to freezer bags or airtight containers. This prevents them from sticking together.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft, mushy texture
- Sour or fermented odor
- Visible mold growth
- Discoloration (dark spots, unusual browning)
- Leaking or sticky residue
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Fresh figs should be refrigerated promptly to prevent rapid spoilage and bacterial growth. Discard any figs left in the danger zone for longer than the recommended time.
Safe Handling
Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling fresh produce.
Gently rinse fresh figs under cool running tap water just before eating or preparing. Do not use soap or detergents.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping figs separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
Discard any figs that show signs of spoilage immediately.
