8-12 months

Wash, dry, and remove stems. Chilies can be frozen whole, sliced, or chopped. Pack in airtight freezer bags or containers.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft spots or mushy texture
  • Mold growth (fuzzy white, green, or black spots)
  • Discoloration (darkening or unusual spots)
  • Slimy or sticky surface
  • Off-odor or sour smell

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Fresh chilies, like most fresh produce, will degrade in quality and potentially safety if left at room temperature for extended periods. Refrigerate promptly for best quality and to slow spoilage.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling fresh chilies.

2

Wash fresh chilies under running water just before eating, cutting, or cooking.

3

Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for fresh produce and raw meat, poultry, or seafood.

4

Wear gloves when handling hot chilies to prevent skin irritation and avoid touching eyes or other sensitive areas.
