Frozen onions should be kept frozen until ready to use or stored in the refrigerator after thawing. Pantry storage is not suitable for frozen or thawed onions.
Refrigerator
3-4 days
Once thawed, store frozen onions in a tightly sealed container or bag in the refrigerator. Use within 3-4 days for best quality and safety.
Freezer
8-12 months for best quality, safe indefinitely
After opening, reseal the original package tightly or transfer the remaining frozen onions to an airtight freezer-safe bag or container to prevent freezer burn and maintain quality. Label with the date.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor (sour or unpleasant smell)
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Visible mold growth
- Significant discoloration
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Thawed frozen onions should not be left in the 'Danger Zone' for more than 2 hours. Discard any thawed onions left out beyond these time limits.
Safe Handling
Keep frozen onions frozen until ready to use.
Thaw frozen onions in the refrigerator, under cold running water, or in the microwave.
Do not refreeze thawed onions that have been at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling food.
