Pantry

Until 'Best By' date (unopened)

Store unopened jars in a cool, dark, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, fruit butter must be refrigerated.

Refrigerator

1-2 months (opened)

Keep opened fruit butter tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Always use clean utensils to prevent contamination.

Freezer

6-8 months for best quality, safe indefinitely

Transfer fruit butter to freezer-safe containers, leaving about 1/2 inch of headspace to allow for expansion. Label with the date.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Visible mold growth on the surface or lid
  • Off-odor, such as a sour, yeasty, or fermented smell
  • Unusual discoloration or darkening
  • Fuzzy or slimy texture
  • Bubbles or signs of fermentation (unless it is a fermented product, which fruit butter is not)

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour if ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Do not leave opened fruit butter at room temperature for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C), as bacteria can multiply rapidly in the danger zone.
