Fruit ButterShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Until 'Best By' date (unopened)
Store unopened jars in a cool, dark, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, fruit butter must be refrigerated.
Refrigerator
1-2 months (opened)
Keep opened fruit butter tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Always use clean utensils to prevent contamination.
Freezer
6-8 months for best quality, safe indefinitely
Transfer fruit butter to freezer-safe containers, leaving about 1/2 inch of headspace to allow for expansion. Label with the date.
Signs of Spoilage
- Visible mold growth on the surface or lid
- Off-odor, such as a sour, yeasty, or fermented smell
- Unusual discoloration or darkening
- Fuzzy or slimy texture
- Bubbles or signs of fermentation (unless it is a fermented product, which fruit butter is not)
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)
Do not leave opened fruit butter at room temperature for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C), as bacteria can multiply rapidly in the danger zone.
Safe Handling
Always use clean utensils when serving fruit butter to avoid introducing bacteria.
Do not double-dip utensils into the jar.
Ensure the lid is tightly sealed after each use to maintain freshness and prevent contamination.
Discard fruit butter if it shows any signs of spoilage, regardless of the storage duration.
