Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep tightly sealed. Unopened ghee can last up to 1 year or more, following the 'best by' date.

Refrigerator

6 months to 1 year (opened)

Store in an airtight container. Refrigeration can extend shelf life and prevent rancidity. Ghee will solidify in the fridge.

Freezer

1 year or more

Store in an airtight, freezer-safe container. Ghee will become very hard when frozen.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Rancid or sour odor
  • Significant discoloration (darkening or unusual shades)
  • Mold growth (rare, but possible if moisture is introduced)
  • Unpleasant or off-taste

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to perishable foods. While ghee is a stable fat, it is best to minimize time spent in the danger zone, especially if moisture or other ingredients have been introduced.

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Although ghee is less susceptible to bacterial growth than other dairy products due to its low moisture content, it should still be stored properly. If it has been exposed to the danger zone for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour above 90°F/32°C), especially if contaminated, it should be discarded.
