Pantry

1 week

Store whole, uncut grapefruit at cool room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Do not wash until ready to use.

Refrigerator

2-3 weeks

Store whole, uncut grapefruit in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Store cut grapefruit in an airtight container.

Freezer

Peeled sections or juice: 10-12 months

Whole grapefruit is not recommended for freezing. For best quality, peel and section grapefruit, removing all membranes and seeds. Pack sections in a freezer-safe container or bag, optionally covered with light syrup or juice. Grapefruit juice can also be frozen.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft spots or mushy texture
  • Mold growth (white, green, or black fuzzy spots)
  • Discoloration or browning
  • Off-odor

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to cut grapefruit: do not leave cut grapefruit at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Whole, uncut grapefruit can be stored at room temperature for up to 1 week. Once cut, grapefruit becomes a perishable food and must be refrigerated within 2 hours to prevent bacterial growth.
