Pantry

Not Recommended

Unsafe

Yogurt is a perishable dairy product and should not be stored at room temperature. It must be refrigerated promptly.

Refrigerator

1-2 weeks

Keep refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below. Keep container tightly sealed after opening. Do not eat directly from the container if you plan to store leftovers.

Freezer

1-2 months

While safe indefinitely, quality may decline after 1-2 months. Freezing may alter the texture, making it more watery or grainy upon thawing. For best results, freeze in an airtight container, leaving headspace for expansion.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off-odor, more pronounced than its natural tang
  • Visible mold growth (any color)
  • Yellow or green discoloration
  • Excessive liquid separation (whey) that cannot be stirred back in
  • Unusual slimy or lumpy texture

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Perishable foods, including yogurt, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The temperature danger zone for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Always return yogurt to the refrigerator promptly after serving. Discard any yogurt that has been outside of refrigeration for longer than the recommended time limits.
