Greek YogurtShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedUnsafe
Yogurt is a perishable dairy product and should not be stored at room temperature. It must be refrigerated promptly.
Refrigerator
1-2 weeks
Keep refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below. Keep container tightly sealed after opening. Do not eat directly from the container if you plan to store leftovers.
Freezer
1-2 months
While safe indefinitely, quality may decline after 1-2 months. Freezing may alter the texture, making it more watery or grainy upon thawing. For best results, freeze in an airtight container, leaving headspace for expansion.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off-odor, more pronounced than its natural tang
- Visible mold growth (any color)
- Yellow or green discoloration
- Excessive liquid separation (whey) that cannot be stirred back in
- Unusual slimy or lumpy texture
Room Temperature Safety
The temperature danger zone for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
Always return yogurt to the refrigerator promptly after serving. Discard any yogurt that has been outside of refrigeration for longer than the recommended time limits.
Safe Handling
Always refrigerate yogurt at or below 40°F (4°C).
Do not leave yogurt at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
Use clean utensils when serving to prevent cross-contamination.
Discard any yogurt that has been left in the temperature danger zone for too long.
