Refrigeration is highly recommended for fresh green chili peppers to maintain quality and safety. If stored at room temperature for a very short period (1-2 days), keep in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area.
Refrigerator
1-2 weeks
Store unwashed green chili peppers in a plastic bag or wrapped in a paper towel in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash only before use.
Freezer
10-12 months
Wash, dry, stem, and seed (optional) green chili peppers before freezing. They can be frozen whole, chopped, or roasted and peeled. Store in airtight freezer bags or containers to prevent freezer burn.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft spots or mushy texture
- Sliminess
- Mold growth (fuzzy white, green, or black spots)
- Significant discoloration (e.g., dark spots, dullness)
- Off-odor or sour smell
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' is the temperature range between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly to unsafe levels.
Fresh green chili peppers should be refrigerated promptly after purchase. If left at room temperature, consume or refrigerate within 2 hours to minimize bacterial growth.
Safe Handling
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling green chili peppers, especially after cutting, as capsaicin can irritate skin and eyes.
Avoid touching eyes or other sensitive areas of the body while handling peppers.
Use separate cutting boards and utensils for fresh produce to prevent cross-contamination.
Wash green chili peppers under running water just before use.
