Not recommended

Green onions require refrigeration to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage. Pantry storage is not suitable for extended periods.

Refrigerator

1-2 weeks

Store unwashed green onions in a plastic bag or wrapped in a damp paper towel in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. For longer storage, place them root-end down in a glass with about an inch of water, cover loosely with a plastic bag, and refrigerate.

Freezer

10-12 months

Wash and chop green onions. Blanching is not necessary. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze, then transfer to freezer bags or airtight containers. Use within 10-12 months for best quality.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Yellowing or browning of the green tops
  • Strong, unpleasant odor
  • Mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Green onions should be refrigerated promptly after purchase and preparation. Do not leave them out on the counter for extended periods.
