Pantry

1-3 weeks

Store whole, unripe green papaya at room temperature on the counter, away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate until ripe, as cold temperatures can inhibit ripening and affect flavor.

Refrigerator

Up to 1 week

Once ripe, or if cut, store papaya in a plastic bag or airtight container in the refrigerator's crisper drawer. Consume cut papaya within a few days for best quality and safety.

Freezer

10-12 months

Peel, seed, and cut papaya into chunks or slices. Pack in airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Can be pureed before freezing. Thaw in the refrigerator.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft, mushy spots or excessive bruising.
  • Mold growth on the skin or flesh.
  • Off-odor, sour smell.
  • Significant discoloration or darkening of the flesh.

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to cut papaya: Do not leave cut papaya at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4.4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Refrigerate cut papaya promptly. Whole, unripe green papaya can be stored at room temperature until ripe.
