Ground Coffee, UnopenedShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
3-5 months (for best quality)
Store in a cool, dark, dry place, away from heat and light. Keep in original vacuum-sealed packaging or an airtight, opaque container to preserve flavor and aroma.
Refrigerator
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Storing unopened ground coffee in the refrigerator is generally not recommended due to potential condensation and absorption of odors from other foods, which can degrade quality.
Freezer
1-2 years (for best quality)
For optimal quality, store unopened ground coffee in its original vacuum-sealed packaging or an airtight, freezer-safe container to prevent freezer burn and absorption of odors. Thaw in the refrigerator before use.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mold growth (if moisture has entered the package)
- Unusual, sour, or rancid odor
- Presence of pests
- Significant loss of aroma or flavor (quality degradation)
Room Temperature Safety
The danger zone (40°F–140°F) is for perishable foods. For unopened, shelf-stable ground coffee, this zone is not applicable for microbial safety.
To maintain quality, store unopened ground coffee in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations.
Safe Handling
Keep dry goods sealed to prevent moisture absorption and pest infestation.
Store away from strong-smelling foods to prevent flavor transfer.
Once opened, transfer to an airtight container and store in a cool, dark place or freezer for best quality.
