Pantry

1-2 months (opened)

Store in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dark, dry place to minimize exposure to light, heat, and air, which can cause rancidity. For best quality and to prevent rancidity, refrigeration is highly recommended.

Refrigerator

6-12 months

Store in an airtight, opaque container in the refrigerator to significantly extend shelf life and prevent rancidity. Keep away from strong-smelling foods.

Freezer

1-2 years

Store in an airtight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag. Freezing is the best method for long-term storage to preserve freshness and prevent rancidity.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour, bitter, or 'paint-like' odor (rancidity)
  • Bitter or 'off' taste
  • Visible mold growth
  • Significant discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to perishable foods. While ground flax seed is not highly perishable in the same way as cooked meats, prolonged exposure to room temperature, especially above 70°F (21°C), can accelerate rancidity. It should not be left out for more than 2 hours.

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

For optimal quality and to prevent rancidity, ground flax seed should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer, not at room temperature for extended periods. If used in a recipe, consume or refrigerate the dish within 2 hours.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Always store ground flax seed in an airtight container to prevent oxidation and absorption of odors.

2

Due to its high oil content, ground flax seed is prone to rancidity; check for off-odors before use.

3

Avoid exposing ground flax seed to direct sunlight or heat.

4

Use clean, dry utensils when scooping to prevent moisture introduction.
