Pantry

Not Recommended

Unsafe

Raw ground turkey must be refrigerated or frozen immediately. Do not store at room temperature.

Refrigerator

1-2 days

Store raw ground turkey in its original packaging or in a clean, covered container on the lowest shelf of the refrigerator to prevent juices from dripping onto other foods. Keep at 40°F (4°C) or below.

Freezer

3-4 months

For best quality, freeze raw ground turkey in airtight packaging or heavy-duty freezer bags. Label with the date. Freeze at 0°F (-18°C) or below.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Off-odor (sour or putrid smell)
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Dull or grayish-brown discoloration
  • Mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

Follow the 2-hour rule: Do not leave ground turkey at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), do not leave it out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Refrigerate or freeze ground turkey promptly. Discard any ground turkey left in the danger zone for too long.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

Cook all ground turkey to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) as measured with a food thermometer.

2

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling raw ground turkey.

3
