Pantry

Unopened: 1-2 years (refer to manufacturer's best-by date)

Store in a cool, dark, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Once opened, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for optimal freshness and to prevent rancidity.

Refrigerator

Opened: 6-12 months

Store in an airtight container to prevent absorption of odors and moisture. Refrigeration helps preserve the omega-3 fatty acids and prevents rancidity.

Freezer

1-2 years

Store in a freezer-safe, airtight container or heavy-duty freezer bag to protect from freezer burn and moisture. No need to thaw before use.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Bitter, paint-like, or fishy odor (rancidity)
  • Off-flavor
  • Visible mold
  • Clumping or hardening due to moisture

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

While heat-stabilized ground flax seeds are shelf-stable when unopened, once opened, their oil content makes them susceptible to rancidity and quality degradation if left at room temperature for extended periods. For optimal quality and safety, refrigerate after opening.
