Heavy cream is a perishable dairy product and must be kept refrigerated at all times. Do not store at room temperature.

Refrigerator

1 week after opening, or until 'use-by' date if unopened

Store in its original container, tightly sealed. Keep at 40°F (4°C) or below. Do not return unused cream to the original container.

Freezer

1-2 months for best quality, safe indefinitely

Freeze in airtight containers, leaving headspace as cream expands. Thaw in the refrigerator. Note that freezing may alter texture, making it less suitable for whipping.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off odor
  • Visible mold
  • Yellowish discoloration
  • Thickened or lumpy texture
  • Bitter taste

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Perishable foods, including heavy cream, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time reduces to 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate heavy cream after purchase and use. Discard any cream left in the danger zone for longer than the recommended time.
