JackfruitShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
3-7 days (whole, ripe); several weeks (whole, unripe)
Store whole, unripe jackfruit at room temperature until it ripens. Once ripe, whole jackfruit can be stored at room temperature for a few days. Cut jackfruit should not be stored at room temperature.
Refrigerator
1-2 weeks (whole, ripe); 3-5 days (cut, ripe)
Store whole, ripe jackfruit in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life. Once cut, store jackfruit pieces in an airtight container or tightly wrapped in plastic wrap in the refrigerator.
Freezer
10-12 months (pulp/flesh)
To freeze, separate the edible bulbs from the rind and seeds. Place the bulbs in a single layer on a baking sheet to flash freeze, then transfer to freezer-safe bags or containers. Can also be frozen as chunks or pureed.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mold growth on the surface
- Sour, fermented, or off-odor
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Significant discoloration (darkening or unusual spots)
- Soft spots or leakage on whole fruit
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
Promptly refrigerate or freeze cut jackfruit to prevent bacterial growth. Discard any cut jackfruit left in the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Wash whole jackfruit thoroughly before cutting.
Use clean utensils and cutting surfaces to prevent cross-contamination.
Wear gloves when handling jackfruit to manage its sticky sap.
Promptly refrigerate or freeze cut jackfruit to maintain safety and freshness.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping cut jackfruit separate from raw meats and poultry.
