Pantry

1 year (unopened)

Store unopened jars in a cool, dark, dry place. Once opened, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate.

Refrigerator

5-7 days (opened)

Once opened, transfer cherries and their liquid to a clean, airtight container. Keep refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below.

Freezer

8-12 months (for best quality)

For best quality, transfer opened jar cherries and their liquid to freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, leaving headspace. Thaw in the refrigerator before use.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Off-odor (sour, fermented, or unusual smell)
  • Mold growth (fuzzy spots of any color)
  • Discoloration or darkening of the cherries or liquid
  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Bulging lid on an unopened jar (indicates gas production from spoilage)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Perishable food should not be left out at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Opened jar cherries should be refrigerated promptly. Do not leave at room temperature for extended periods to prevent bacterial growth.
