Sourced from
USDA FoodSafety.govFDA

Pantry

1-2 weeks

Store in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain freshness. Ensure completely cooled before storing.

Refrigerator

1 week

Store in an airtight container. Refrigeration may alter texture but can extend shelf life.

Freezer

6-8 months

Wrap individual kleija tightly in plastic wrap, then place in a heavy-duty freezer bag or airtight container. Thaw at room temperature.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Visible mold growth
  • Off-odor (sour, yeasty, or unpleasant smell)
  • Unusual discoloration
  • Slimy or sticky texture (if applicable to specific ingredients)

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

While kleija is a baked good and less prone to rapid bacterial growth than high-moisture, protein-rich foods, it should still be stored properly to prevent spoilage and maintain quality. If it contains perishable fillings, the 2-hour rule applies strictly.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

Always allow baked goods to cool completely before storing to prevent condensation and mold growth.

2

Store in clean, airtight containers to protect from air and moisture.

3

Avoid storing near strong-smelling foods, as baked goods can absorb odors.
