Lamb LettuceShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedUnsafe
Fresh leafy greens wilt quickly and can become unsafe at room temperature. Store immediately in the refrigerator.
Refrigerator
7-10 days
Store unwashed lamb lettuce in a loose plastic bag or a container lined with paper towels in the crisper drawer. Wash just before use.
Freezer
Not RecommendedNot recommended for raw consumption; up to 10-12 months if blanched for cooking
Freezing raw lamb lettuce is not recommended as it will become limp and watery when thawed, unsuitable for salads. If freezing for cooking, blanch first, then cool, drain, and pack.
Signs of Spoilage
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Significant wilting or limpness
- Off-odor or sour smell
- Darkening or discoloration beyond natural variations
- Visible mold growth
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Lamb lettuce should be refrigerated promptly after purchase. Discard any lamb lettuce left at room temperature for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if above 90°F/32°C).
Safe Handling
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash lamb lettuce under cool running water just before eating. Do not use soap or detergents.
Remove any damaged or discolored leaves before storage or consumption.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping lamb lettuce separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood.
