Not recommended for extended storage

Leeks wilt quickly at room temperature; refrigeration is essential for freshness and safety. Store for a maximum of 1-2 days if refrigeration is not immediately possible, in a cool, dark place.

Refrigerator

1 to 2 weeks

Store unwashed leeks loosely wrapped in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer. Do not trim or wash until ready to use.

Freezer

10 to 12 months

Wash, trim, and slice leeks. Blanch for 2 minutes, then cool quickly in ice water, drain well, and pack into freezer-safe bags or containers.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Slimy or soft texture
  • Yellowing or browning of leaves
  • Strong, unpleasant odor
  • Mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods, including fresh produce, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Leeks should be refrigerated promptly after purchase to maintain quality and safety. Discard any leeks left in the danger zone for too long.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash leeks thoroughly under running water, especially between the layers, to remove any dirt or sand before use.

2

Avoid cross-contamination by keeping leeks separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.

3

Discard any leeks that show signs of spoilage.
