Pantry

1 week

Store whole lemons in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. For longer storage, refrigeration is recommended.

Refrigerator

3-4 weeks

Store whole lemons in a plastic bag or airtight container in the crisper drawer. Cut lemons should be wrapped tightly and used within 2-3 days.

Freezer

3-4 months (slices or juice)

Whole lemons are not typically frozen. For slices, arrange on a baking sheet and freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag. For juice, freeze in ice cube trays.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft spots or mushy texture
  • Discoloration (dark spots, mold)
  • Shriveled or dried-out skin
  • Off-odor

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to cut lemons: do not leave at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C). Whole lemons are less perishable but benefit from refrigeration for extended storage.

40°F–140°F

Cut lemons should be refrigerated promptly. Whole lemons can be stored at room temperature for a short period, but refrigeration extends their shelf life significantly.
