Cooked lentil soup should be refrigerated promptly after cooling to prevent bacterial growth. Do not store at room temperature for extended periods.
Refrigerator
3-4 days
Store cooked lentil soup in shallow, airtight containers. Refrigerate within 2 hours after cooking. Divide large quantities into smaller portions for quicker cooling.
Freezer
2-3 months
Freeze cooked lentil soup in airtight, freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Leave headspace in rigid containers as liquids expand when frozen. Label with the date.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off odor
- Mold growth on the surface
- Unusual discoloration
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Fermented or yeasty smell
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Promptly refrigerate or freeze cooked lentil soup to minimize the time it spends in the danger zone and prevent the rapid multiplication of harmful bacteria.
Safe Handling
Refrigerate or freeze cooked lentil soup within 2 hours of cooking. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), refrigerate within 1 hour.
Reheat all leftovers, including soup, to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
Do not taste food that looks or smells suspicious.
