LettuceShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedUnsafe
Lettuce requires refrigeration to maintain safety and quality. Do not store at room temperature.
Refrigerator
7-10 days
Store unwashed lettuce in a plastic bag or airtight container in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash thoroughly just before use.
Freezer
Not recommended for quality
Freezing lettuce is not recommended as its high water content will cause it to become limp and mushy when thawed, making it unsuitable for most culinary uses.
Signs of Spoilage
- Wilting or limp leaves
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Brown or black spots/discoloration
- Foul or off-odor
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F
Perishable foods, including lettuce, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time limit is reduced to 1 hour. Discard any lettuce left out longer than these recommended times.
Safe Handling
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash lettuce under cool running tap water just before eating, cutting, or cooking. Do not use soap, detergent, or commercial produce washes.
Remove any outer leaves that are damaged or discolored.
Prevent cross-contamination by keeping lettuce separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood, and by using separate cutting boards and utensils.
