Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Store in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and safety. Pantry storage will lead to rapid wilting and spoilage.
Refrigerator
7-10 days
Store unwashed in a loose plastic bag or breathable container in the crisper drawer. Wash thoroughly under running water just before use.
Freezer
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Freezing is not recommended for fresh lettuce as its high water content causes it to become limp, mushy, and lose its texture upon thawing.
Signs of Spoilage
- Wilting and limpness
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Discoloration (browning or black spots)
- Off-odor or sour smell
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Lettuce should be refrigerated promptly after purchase and preparation. Discard any lettuce left in the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash lettuce thoroughly under cool running tap water just before eating, cutting, or cooking. Do not use soap or detergents.
Remove any outer leaves that are damaged or discolored.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping lettuce separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood.
Keep lettuce refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below.
