Pantry

1 year

Store unopened pure maple syrup in a cool, dark place. Once opened, refrigeration is required.

Refrigerator

1 year

Refrigerate pure maple syrup immediately after opening to prevent mold growth. Keep tightly sealed.

Freezer

Indefinitely

For best quality, use within 1 year. Store in an airtight, freezer-safe container. Leave headspace as syrup may expand slightly.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Mold growth (fuzzy spots)
  • Off-odor (sour or yeasty)
  • Fermentation (bubbles, alcoholic smell)
  • Unusual discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Do not leave perishable foods at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), reduce this time to 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

While pure maple syrup is shelf-stable when unopened, once opened, it should be refrigerated. If left out at room temperature for extended periods after opening, it can develop mold or ferment. Always refrigerate opened syrup promptly.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Always use clean utensils when serving to prevent contamination.

2

If mold appears, discard the entire product; do not attempt to scrape off mold as toxins may be present throughout.
