Pantry

1 year (unopened)

Store unopened jars in a cool, dark, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, refrigeration is required.

Refrigerator

2-4 weeks (opened)

Keep opened jar tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Always use clean utensils to remove cherries to prevent contamination.

Freezer

Not recommended for quality, safe indefinitely at 0°F (-18°C)

While safe indefinitely from a food safety standpoint, freezing maraschino cherries is not recommended due to significant changes in texture and quality upon thawing. If freezing, transfer to an airtight freezer-safe container.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Mold growth on the surface or inside the jar
  • Off-odor, sour, or fermented smell
  • Discoloration or darkening of the cherries
  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Fizzy appearance or bubbling, indicating fermentation

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Do not leave opened maraschino cherries at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.
