Fresh marjoram will wilt and spoil quickly at room temperature. Best to refrigerate immediately.

Refrigerator

1-2 weeks

Wrap fresh marjoram in a damp paper towel and place in a plastic bag, or store upright in a glass of water with a plastic bag loosely covering the top. Store in the crisper drawer.

Freezer

10-12 months

Wash and pat dry. Chop leaves and freeze in ice cube trays with water or olive oil, then transfer frozen cubes to a freezer-safe bag. Alternatively, flash freeze whole leaves on a baking sheet before transferring to a freezer bag.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Wilting
  • Discoloration (yellowing or blackening)
  • Slimy texture
  • Mold growth
  • Off or sour odor

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to perishable foods. Fresh marjoram should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

If fresh marjoram is left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), it should be discarded due to potential bacterial growth.
