Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Mascarpone cheese is a perishable dairy product and should be refrigerated immediately. Do not store at room temperature for extended periods.
Refrigerator
1 week (after opening); until 'use-by' date (unopened)
Keep mascarpone cheese tightly covered in its original container or an airtight package. Store in the coldest part of the refrigerator.
Freezer
Not recommended for quality, but safe indefinitely at 0°F (-18°C)
While safe to freeze, the texture of mascarpone cheese may become grainy or crumbly upon thawing. For best results, use frozen and thawed mascarpone in cooked dishes rather than raw applications. Freeze in an airtight container.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off odor
- Visible mold growth
- Discoloration (e.g., yellowing or green spots)
- Slimy or sticky texture
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for rapid bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Promptly refrigerate mascarpone cheese after purchase and use. Discard any mascarpone cheese that has been left in the danger zone for longer than the recommended time.
Safe Handling
Always keep mascarpone cheese refrigerated at or below 40°F (4°C).
Avoid cross-contamination by using clean utensils when scooping cheese.
Do not leave mascarpone cheese at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
