Milk, openedShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedUnsafe
Do not store opened milk at room temperature. Refrigerate promptly after opening.
Refrigerator
4-7 days
Keep milk in its original container, tightly sealed, and stored on an inside shelf of the refrigerator, not in the door, where temperatures fluctuate. Maintain refrigerator temperature at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
3 months
Milk can be frozen in its original container if there is headspace for expansion, or transferred to airtight freezer-safe containers. Thaw frozen milk in the refrigerator. Quality may be affected (separation, graininess), but it remains safe.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off odor
- Lumpy, curdled, or thick texture
- Discoloration (e.g., yellowish tint)
- Mold growth
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)
Opened milk should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), milk should not be left out for more than 1 hour before being refrigerated or discarded.
Safe Handling
Refrigerate opened milk promptly at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Do not leave opened milk at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
Avoid drinking directly from the carton to prevent bacterial contamination.
Always check the 'use-by' or 'sell-by' date on the carton, but rely on spoilage signs once opened.
