Milk (Pasteurized, opened)Shelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedUnsafe
Regular pasteurized milk requires constant refrigeration. Only unopened shelf-stable (UHT) milk can be stored in the pantry according to package directions, but must be refrigerated after opening.
Refrigerator
5-7 days after opening
Keep milk in its original container and store on an inside shelf, not in the door, where temperatures fluctuate. Ensure refrigerator temperature is 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
3 months
Milk can be frozen in its original container if there's headspace, or transferred to airtight freezer-safe containers. It may separate and become grainy after thawing, but is safe to consume. Thaw in the refrigerator and shake well before use.

Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)
Perishable foods, including milk, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), milk should not be left out for more than 1 hour.
Safe Handling
Always refrigerate milk promptly at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Do not drink milk directly from the carton to prevent contamination.
Discard milk that has been left at room temperature for too long.
Check 'sell-by' or 'use-by' dates, but rely on spoilage signs once opened.
