Soft and processed cheeses require refrigeration for safety and quality. Unopened shelf-stable processed cheese products may be stored in a cool, dry pantry until opened, but always check product-specific labeling.

Refrigerator

3-4 weeks (opened)

Keep tightly wrapped in its original packaging or an airtight container. Store in the coldest part of the refrigerator.

Freezer

6-8 months for best quality, safe indefinitely

Wrap tightly in freezer-safe wrap or foil, then place in an airtight freezer bag or container. Thaw in the refrigerator.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Mold (especially fuzzy or discolored mold on soft cheese)
  • Sour or off odor
  • Slimy texture
  • Discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Perishable foods, including cheese, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time reduces to 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate cheese after purchase and use. Discard any cheese left in the danger zone for too long.
