Fresh mint wilts quickly at room temperature and loses flavor. For best quality and safety, store in the refrigerator.

Refrigerator

7-10 days

Wrap unwashed fresh mint in a damp paper towel, then place it in a plastic bag or an airtight container. Store in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash only right before use.

Freezer

10-12 months for best quality

Wash and thoroughly pat dry. You can chop and freeze in ice cube trays with water or olive oil, or freeze whole leaves in a single layer on a baking sheet before transferring to an airtight freezer bag or container.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Significant wilting or limpness
  • Darkening or blackening of leaves
  • Slimy texture
  • Mold growth
  • Off-odor

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Fresh mint should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), it should not be left out for more than 1 hour, as bacteria can multiply rapidly in the danger zone.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Always wash fresh mint under cool running water just before use to remove any dirt or residues.

2

Prevent cross-contamination by keeping fresh herbs separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
