Fresh mint leaves are highly perishable and best stored in the refrigerator. If immediate refrigeration is not possible, keep in a cool, dry place for no more than 1-2 days.
Refrigerator
7-10 days
Wrap unwashed mint leaves loosely in a damp paper towel and place in a plastic bag or airtight container. Store in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator.
Freezer
10-12 months
Wash and thoroughly pat dry mint leaves. You can freeze whole leaves in an airtight freezer bag, or chop and freeze in ice cube trays with water or oil. Label with the date.
Signs of Spoilage
- Wilting or limp leaves
- Darkening or black spots on leaves
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Mold growth
- Off-odor
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)
Fresh mint leaves should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If left out longer, especially in temperatures within the danger zone, discard them to prevent bacterial growth.
Safe Handling
Always wash fresh mint leaves thoroughly under cool running water before use to remove dirt and potential contaminants.
Prevent cross-contamination by keeping fresh herbs separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
Discard any mint leaves that show signs of spoilage.
