Pantry

2-3 days (until ripe)

Store unripe nectarines at room temperature on the counter, away from direct sunlight. Once ripe, consume or refrigerate.

Refrigerator

3-5 days

Store ripe nectarines in a plastic bag or crisper drawer in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and slow ripening.

Freezer

10-12 months

Wash, peel (optional), pit, and slice nectarines. Pack in freezer bags or airtight containers, optionally with a light syrup or sugar to prevent browning and maintain quality.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft spots or mushy texture
  • Mold growth (fuzzy white, green, or black spots)
  • Sour or fermented odor
  • Discoloration (darkening or unusual spots)

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time is reduced to 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Nectarines are best stored at room temperature only until ripe. Once ripe, they should be refrigerated to extend their shelf life and prevent spoilage, especially if not consumed within the 2-hour rule.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash nectarines thoroughly under running water before eating, even if peeling.

2

Avoid cross-contamination by keeping fresh produce separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood.

3

Discard any nectarines that show signs of spoilage.
