Pantry

Not Recommended

Unsafe

Raw octopus should not be stored at room temperature or in the pantry due to rapid spoilage.

Refrigerator

1-2 days

Store raw octopus in the coldest part of the refrigerator (40°F/4°C or below). Place it in a sealed container or on a plate covered with plastic wrap to prevent drips from contaminating other foods.

Freezer

3-6 months

For best quality, freeze raw octopus in an airtight, freezer-safe bag or container. Remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. Thaw in the refrigerator, not at room temperature.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Strong, pungent, or 'fishy' odor
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Dull or faded color
  • Cloudy eyes (if whole)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule states that perishable food should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Never leave raw or cooked octopus at room temperature for extended periods. Always refrigerate or freeze promptly.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling raw octopus.

2

Prevent cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards, plates, and utensils for raw octopus and other foods.

3

Cook octopus to an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) as measured with a food thermometer.

4

Refrigerate or freeze cooked octopus within 2 hours of cooking.
