Pantry

Store whole, unpeeled onions in a cool, dry, dark, and well-ventilated place. Avoid storing with potatoes, as both release gases that can accelerate spoilage.

Refrigerator

7-10 days

Whole, unpeeled onions are best stored in a cool, dry, dark place. If you must refrigerate whole onions, they may become soft and lose some flavor. Once cut, store in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Freezer

3-6 months

Onions should be chopped and blanched before freezing for best quality. Freezing whole raw onions is not recommended as it significantly degrades texture.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft spots or mushy texture
  • Mold growth
  • Strong, unpleasant odor
  • Discoloration (dark spots)
  • Excessive sprouting (while edible, indicates quality decline)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to cut or cooked onions. Whole, unpeeled onions can be stored at room temperature for longer periods.

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Cut or cooked onions should not be left at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), they should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling onions.

2

Wash whole onions under running water before peeling or cutting.

3

Prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw onions separate from ready-to-eat foods and using separate cutting boards and utensils.

4

Refrigerate cut, peeled, or cooked onions promptly within 2 hours (1 hour if the ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
