OrangeShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
1 week
Store whole, unpeeled oranges at cool room temperature (60-70°F) away from direct sunlight. Do not store in airtight containers as they need air circulation.
Refrigerator
3-4 weeks
Store whole, unpeeled oranges in a crisper drawer or mesh bag in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and prevent mold. Avoid storing in sealed plastic bags.
Freezer
10-12 months
To freeze, peel oranges and separate into segments, removing as much white pith and seeds as possible. Pack in airtight freezer bags or containers. Can also be frozen as juice.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft spots or mushy texture
- Mold growth (white, green, or black fuzzy spots)
- Discoloration or dullness of the peel
- Off-odor or fermented smell
- Leaking juice
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C). Perishable foods should not remain in this temperature range for extended periods.
Whole, unpeeled oranges can be stored at cool room temperature for up to 1 week. Once cut or peeled, oranges become perishable and must be refrigerated promptly.
Safe Handling
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash whole oranges under cool running tap water, even if you plan to peel them, to remove dirt and surface bacteria. Do not use soap or detergent.
Use a clean cutting board and utensils when preparing oranges to prevent cross-contamination.
Refrigerate cut or peeled oranges in a clean, covered container within 2 hours.
