Pantry

1 week

Store at cool room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Do not wash until ready to eat.

Refrigerator

3-4 weeks

Store unwashed in a plastic bag or crisper drawer to maintain moisture.

Freezer

10-12 months (segments or juice)

Peel and separate into segments, removing seeds and pith. Freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to freezer-safe bags or containers. Can also be juiced and frozen.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft spots or mushy texture
  • Visible mold growth (white, green, or black fuzzy spots)
  • Discoloration, especially dark spots or dullness
  • Off-odor or fermented smell
  • Leaking juice or sticky residue on the surface

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Do not leave perishable food out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

While whole, unpeeled oranges are less perishable than many foods, once cut or peeled, they should be refrigerated within 2 hours to prevent bacterial growth. Even whole, prolonged exposure to temperatures above 70°F (21°C) will shorten their shelf life.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash oranges thoroughly under running water before peeling or cutting, even if you don't plan to eat the peel.

2

Prevent cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for produce and raw meats.

3

Once cut or peeled, refrigerate promptly.
